GOOD MOTHER CALLED HOME
Mrs. Rachel Carothers passed away at the home of her son, A. M. Carothers, on Rogers Ave., Tuesday night. She had been sick about three weeks, and suffered a stroke of paralysis on Monday before her death.
Deceased was born in Illinois, May 9, 1839, and would have been 83 years old had she lived until the 9th of this month. Her maiden name was Rachel Lowery. In August, 1857, she was united in marriage with Clark Carothers, who preceded her in death on Feb. 7, 1901, when they lived on a farm east of Clinton. Thirteen children were born to them, six of whom survive, as follows: A. M. and Orlando Carothers, Clinton; Chas. Carothers, Maple Hill, Kansas; Geo. Carothers, Bunkerhill, Kas.; W. H. Carothers, Ft. Scott, Kas., and Jerome Carothers, Topeka, Kas. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren.
They came to Henry county, from Illinois, about 48 years ago, and since the death of her husband, Mrs. Carothers had made her home with her children. She was a good Christian woman and was a member of the Clinton Christian church. She was the last of her family, a brother and a sister having preceded her in death in the past 18 months.
The son, W. H. carothers and wife, of Ft. Scott, Kas., arrived Tuesday night, and the other children were expected to come to attend the funeral.
Funeral services were conducted at the residence at 10 a.m. Thursday, by Rev. A. N. Lindsey, and the remains were taken to the Norris cemetery, north of Hartwell, and burial beside the grave of her husband.
